Saving the World is not My Job

Amos 5:21-24

21“I hate all your show and pretense—
the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies.
22 I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings.
I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings.
23 Away with your noisy hymns of praise!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice,
an endless river of righteous living.

This is how I feel – way too often.  I have a bit of trouble seeing those who are worshiping in Spirit and Truth and I tend to focus on those who are pretentious, empty, and insincere.

It is easy to take matters into my own hands.  It is easy to want to control others.  It is easy to not love those who are empty and who insist on going through the motions.  What I need to do however is to listen to my Lord, hear his calling, and obey Him.  Don’t chastise without direction.  Don’t encourage without direction.  Don’t preach without direction.  And don’t try to change the direction of people – without direction from God.

Father God, thank you for setting my agenda for me and for not putting the responsibility of saving the world on my shoulders.  Please give me wisdom, strength, and courage.

What's this?
